I Told You So

I Told You So

I wanted to say to you,
I told you so.
I came to you broken, deep wounds and scars,
God gave you another chance to hold me as yours
after you threw me away to the wolves.

I wanted to say to you…
I told you so.
Knife in my heart, twisted, careening, tailspin---
You weren’t there to catch me.
All of my life I set you on a pedestal high,
dreamed you would want me, would save me, protect me, and love me.
Instead, you drove the blade deeper into my soul.

I wanted to say to you,
I told you so.
I had dreams so big once freedom came,
the whole world was waiting; nothing could stop me---
Christ in me, hope of glory, life in my veins and my lungs.
You told me I’d never finish, never see it through.
Crushed, I believed the lie.
But again, in my darkest places, God saw me…
And He picked me up.

I wanted to say to you,
I told you so.
God showed me a man broken by years of bottle and powder.
I chose to forgive you…
and finally let your lie die.
Every fear, every scar, every doubt---erased
by a faithful, relentless, loving God.

I wanted to write on my graduation caps
“I told you so.”
Instead…
I am His child
Because He says so.
